Bangor 3rds travelled to Newforge to finally play their McCambley Cup tie against PSNI 2nds. With the game being called off two weeks in a row because of a waterlogged pitch, both teams were more than happy that the game was going ahead.
Bangor had a slow start to the game with sloppy passing and lack of concentration around the ruck, allowing PSNI to gain territory and score the first points of the game with a penalty, putting the home team in front 3-0.
This seemed to stir Bangor on as from here there was only going to be one team winning. Bangor started using ball much better with forwards carrying well and leaving the backs with clean ball at the ruck. Eventually Lee Johnston cut through to score under the posts and bring Bangor onto the scoreboard.
Pressure continued throughout the first half and a beautiful show-and-go from outhalf Harry Blair allowed him to score close to the posts giving Bangor a 14-3 lead. Gregory Gout then powered over from short range and Ned Stewart converted all 3 first half tries to put Bangor in 21-3 up at half time.
With words at half time clearly being told to move the ball and utilise the wide players to open up space, Bangor began to play a brilliant brand of rugby to watch, starting with a move that put fullback Jonny Baxter in to score in the right hand corner.
Bangor's forwards were dominating PSNI with more pace and power in their carrying and tackling, with a carry from Ryan Willis inside the 22 resulting in him powering over for a try.
Then came the try of the day. Excellent field position being set up by the forward pack and a great set piece scrum gave the backs an excellent platform to attack from, resulting in a Chris Beattie try in the left hand corner following a flowing back move shifting the ball from one side of the field to the other.
Scrumhalf Chris Walton was a thorn in PSNI's side all day with his sniping around the rucks, and another break saw him release James Neil who fed Ned Stewart to sidestep the last defender to score under the posts.
The scoring was rounded off with a try for captain Harry Taylor, with the forwards continuing to carry well and causing problems at the breakdown for PSNI a turnover around the 10m line allowed Bangor's pack to attack with front foot ball and eventually the ball was recycled to the backs and Harry Blair found Harry Taylor to score to the left hand side. The conversion was added to leave the final score at 50-3.
A good performance from the Gryphons allowed them to see off PSNI and advance to the quarterfinals of the McCambley Cup where they will now meet local rivals Donaghadee at home.
