Bangor 3rds secure Provincial League Division 6 title after beating Clogher Valley 3rds 21-25 at the Cran.

The disappointment of Bangor 2nds defeat by Clogher Valley at Upritchard Park was lifted by the 3rds recording a 21-25 victory against Clogher Valley 3rds at the Cran which not only maintained their unbeaten run in the league, but also secured the Provincial League Division 6 title at the first time of asking.

It took twenty-five minutes for the Gryphons to convert a penalty by Chris Walton to take the lead. Then only five minutes later James Neil scored a try with a steal at a Clogher line out, however, it was not converted.

Clogher hit back quickly through a chip and chase which was gathered to score their first try, the kick was converted. The game was now starting to come alive as the Gryphons responded with their captain Alan Atcheson going over from a yard out which was converted by Chris Walton. Then on the stroke of half time the much heavier Clogher pack mauled over from a line-out to score their 2nd try.

Half time score Clogher Valley 14 Bangor 15, and all to play for.

After a stern team talk from coach Jason Rainey the Gryphons started better in the second forty. After a period of pressure, Bangor used the kick and chase tactic, which resulted in an unconverted try for Jonny Baxter.

Both teams were playing to their strengths. Clogher being the older and heavier team had a distinct advantage up front with the Gryphons matching this by getting the ball into the hands of their backs. It was blow and counter blow as these two committed sides slugged it out.

On the half hour mark a Clogher player was sanctioned with a team yellow for them continually being in an offside position with the Gryphons Captain, Alan Atcheson, also receiving a yellow. Both departed for the remainder. his was followed by a Gryphons try with Jonny Baxter going over for his 2nd, however his colourful celebrations resulted in him being sent to the bin by the referee.

Five minutes left and it was fourteen versus thirteen with Clogher piling pressure on the Bangor line with big carries once again by their larger and more experienced pack. The Gryphons defence could not hold out and Clogher drove over for the final try which was converted bringing the game to an end with a final score of 21-25 in Bangor’s favour.

The club is indebted to the work of Jason Rainey and the entire 3rds squad for the effort they have all put in this season. With the Gryphons being crowned league champions in their first season at junior level, this is an amazing achievement. With a semi-final coming up on the 11th March against the PSNI, the Gryphons hope they can maintain their momentum and make it a double winning season.
