Bangor Mini Rugby roars at the Tigers Challenge

Bangor Mini Rugby roars at the Tigers Challenge

Roger Corbett27 Apr - 08:00

Our P7 minis enjoyed an unforgettable and successful tour at the Tigers Challenge in Bognor Regis.

The squad was split into two evenly matched teams: Bangor Sharks and Bangor Lions — and both rose superbly to the challenge.

Bangor Sharks

The Sharks kicked off strongly with wins over Chiswick RFC and Dover, playing some fantastic rugby and scoring plenty of superb tries. That set up a top of the table clash with unbeaten Diss RFC — a tense, evenly matched game locked at 1–1 at half time before injuries tipped the balance and Diss edged ahead.

Sunday saw the Sharks battle hard in a tough league against Chipstead, Lisburn and Guildford. A nail biting draw with Chipstead was followed by a convincing win over Lisburn, setting up a thrilling final with Guildford. Locked at two tries apiece for much of the game, Guildford eventually found the decisive score, leaving the Sharks deserving runners up.

Bangor Lions

The Lions were unstoppable on Saturday, recording impressive wins over Guildford, Tunbridge Wells and Tring, playing free flowing rugby and finishing the day unbeaten and top of the league.

On the final day, the Lions faced Ironsides RFC, Tonbridge RFC, and familiar foes Diss RFC. Well prepped and inspired by coach Ian Martindale, Bangor hit the ground running, securing two early wins to set up a winner takes all showdown with Diss.

Diss’ coaching team informed the referee and Bangor Coaches that, by their calculations, the match would decide the overall tournament champions. As they were the top seeded team after Day 1 and both teams unbeaten across the weekend. A large and eager crowd gathered to watch a cracking contest. Diss struck first, but Bangor responded brilliantly when Ethan Martindale produced a stunning individual try to level the score at half time.

The second half was played at full throttle, with both teams giving everything. The Lions struck next — and then defended heroically to close out a famous victory. A truly outstanding effort from every player. And rightly celebrated by the entire squad.

The weekend finished in style at Butlin’s, with both teams proudly receiving their silverware from British & Irish Lions legend and England World Cup winner Will Greenwood — the perfect end to a memorable tour.

The Club is proud of every player. The future is bright at Bangor RFC.
