Senior coaching team announced

Roger Corbett27 Jun 2023 - 09:12

New season, new faces, new opportunities

Having stepped in at relatively short notice last December to take on the job of Head Coach, it's great news for Bangor RFC that Dave Irwin has not only agreed to extend his time in this role, but has also assembled a new and exciting coaching team that will give an improved focus across all the senior teams.

Dave shares his thoughts below on the season ahead, and introduces the coaching staff that will do all they can to help him achieve his goals.

"I am delighted to announce the following senior coaching team for the incoming season 2023/24. Each of them brings great experience and ability; but more importantly, they understand that Bangor RFC has a great history amongst Ulster and Irish Rugby. We are all committed to adding to that history by supporting and developing every player at the club, no matter what age group or ability. We are strengthening relations with Bangor Grammar School and Bangor Academy, as well as committing to developing coaches and players within our youth section.

I welcome;

Scott Young - 1st XV Assistant coach and backs coach

Scott is an Ireland Development player with 43 Ulster Caps, which included winning the Celtic Cup and Celtic league. As a Campbell College Schools Cup winner, the draw of the black shirt continued as Scott played his club rugby with Ballymena, where he was part of their All Ireland League winning side of 2003. With numerous other league and cup titles, in both Ulster and the English Championship, Scott brings vast experience and a winning mentality.

Scott is a qualified as an IRFU Level 4 and S&C coach and is currently completing the IRFU High Performance coaching qualification with myself.

James Griffin - 1st XV Manager

‘Griff’ has worked tirelessly with the 2nd XV management over the past seasons and will bring a positive influence, coaching knowledge, organisation and dedication. The 1st XV are in good hands and will be fully prepared each week. His commitment to both the rugby and cricket club at Bangor will be an asset and example to us all and help develop a winning culture across the club.

Stewart Evans - 2nd XV head coach

At 30 years of age Stewart is starting his coaching career with Bangor. He brings a wealth of recent playing experience having played in AIL Division 1 with Ballynahinch and Division 2 with Queens, as well as winning Senior Cups. Having previously coached Stewart, I have first-hand experience of the character he has and how his enthusiasm and desire to win is infectious.

Stuart Hennesey - 2nd XV Assistant Coach

As an Ulster Juniors player, Stuart also has AIL playing experience with both Ballynahinch and Bangor. Stuart played at Bangor Grammar and Bangor RFC U18/U20/2nd XV and 1st XV. Stuart joins us as an already qualified level 4 IRFU coach with previous senior coaching experience at Donaghadee. Having coached some of our more senior players the club whilst they were at BGS, which included a tour to New Zealand, Stuart will be able to pick up where he left off. His strong connection and history with Bangor will ensure the other coaches don’t forget the club’s proud history.

Matt Nesbitt - 2nd XV Manager

Matt is still recovering from a back injury he picked up during last season, whilst he will be keen to return to playing, he has taken on the role of 2nd XV manager. Matt will ensure that Stewart and Stuart are well advised on players and that the 2nd XV is well equipped each week to be successful in their league and cup competitions.

Ryan Latimer - Physio and Conditioning Coach

“Lats” is another Bangor stalwart. He joined the club around 24 years ago as a mini and progressed to 1st XV AIL rugby. As a previous 2nd XV coach at Bangor and in knowing the players so well, he will ensure we are doing everything to get the best out of each player this season and beyond.

As a practicing Physiotherapist, at Windmill Physiotherapy Clinic, and an IRFU qualified S&C coach, Lats is yet again the perfect choice to give all the players the opportunities they need to be able to cope with the physical demands of the game, no matter what that level may be.

Ricky Armstrong, Stephen Addy and Mark Vance - 3rd XV Management

There are no words!! The 3rd XV are in exceptional hands this season with these 3 club legends. On and off the pitch this should be a hugely enjoyable season for the 3rd XV but don’t be fooled, winning the league and a cup are high on their agenda……it makes the social side even more enjoyable."
