This was always going to be a demanding and physical game, as the visitors team were a school year ahead of the majority of the Bangor team.
Bangor started with a strong tail wind, attacking the Balloo Road end of the park. For the whole of the first half, this was an extremely fast paced game. Caldy kept the ball alive extremely well, displaying some excellent handling skills across the park, from all of their players. That being said, Bangor persevered until halftime, and despite conceding a number of early tries, they stuck to the task with a steely determination, which must be admired. The biggest concern was Bangor’s performance defensively, which was their downfall in the first half.
After strong words of encouragement at halftime, there was a notable difference in Bangor’s performance in the second half, in terms of their organisation in defence and line speed. This had the desired effect of disrupting the Caldy defence, and providing Bangor at times with a strong attacking platform. Inevitably after a frantically paced first half, and playing into a strong head wind in the second half, the boys were all exhausted at the final whistle.
The second half of this game was extremely encouraging, and showed what progress the young men are making as a group of players, to carry into next season. Praise must be given for the positive attitude and gutsy performance the whole squad contributed to. The final score was a 42 - 12 win to the visitors, however it this was a slightly flattering end result. It is hoped that the Bangor lads can draw some confidence following on from the second half performance, which really highlighted the teams capability.
Praise also to both sets of players, who were a credit to their respective clubs in terms of their conduct on the pitch, and warm words for each other after the match.
Thanks to all who supported the team, and those who assisted with catering and entertaining our visitors. This was warmly received by Caldy, who were extremely grateful.
