The long-running saga of this semi-final fixture was finally settled last night with the home side coming out narrowly on top by 22-15. With the original fixture ending in a draw, the referee at the time signalled Bangor as the winners as they had scored first in the game. However, this was later overturned when the rulebook was consulted and the result was changed in Hinch's favour as they had scored 4 tries to Bangor's 3.
It was later agreed by both clubs that the fairest way to resolve the issue would be a replay, but with the final scheduled for this weekend (4th March), there wasn't much time to fit the game in. Bangor's problem was that many of their U16 side were going to be touring in Italy with their school, Bangor Academy. This meant that the first opportunity to play the game was Wednesday evening, but for many of the boys this would effectively mean having to get off the plane from Italy and then play the match, and this after playing a couple of games during the week they were away on tour!
It's to the credit of all involved with U16 rugby both at the school and club that the lads remained positive and competitive to the end, and can be satisfied that they gave it their all. An unfortunate footnote to the game was that Sean McClory suffered a broken leg in a tackle, and had to be taken to the Ulster Hospital for treatment. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
