Bangor’s U14 travelled to Lurgan to play in the Ulster Carpets Cup with much apprehension having been beaten by the same team twice in the league already. Also with only 15 players able to travel it looked on paper to be a huge task.
With no big expectations but a really positive attitude the boys took to the pitch and from the kick off had Lurgan on the back foot. Although Lurgan were man for man bigger, the Bangor boys punched well above their weight, and in the first 5 min after some great handling Josh Hunter exploded through the defence to score under the posts with the conversion to follow. This sprung Lurgan into action but the intensity and aggression of Bangor's defence meant time after time Lurgan spilt the ball, only managing to score a try before the end of the half.
The second half started badly with Bangor not dealing with the kick off, resulting in an easy Lurgan try. With no subs to call on and Lurgan able to rotate their squad the Bangor heads dropped letting Lurgan score a further 2 try’s. With the score at 24-7 it looked like history would repeat itself, but with some words of encouragement the boys rallied and kept Lurgan in their own half. Determined play saw Josh Newell crash over again but the ref was unsighted and, with no TMO available, the try was not awarded.
The match finished with the boys having played a fantastic game of rugby. Man of the match was Josh Hunter who had a fantastic game at full back. The boys did themselves proud and all played exceptionally well. Many thanks go to all the travelling supporters.
