Bangor U14’s end an emphatic week on a high, with a 34 - 5 win against Omagh

The boys faced Omagh, in the quarter finals of the plate, in what is now the business end of the season.

Upritchard Park was graced with glorious sunshine and vocal support. There is no doubt the boys profile has been enhanced, after the majority of the team were involved in Bangor Academy’s U14 cup win earlier in the week.

With expectations high from both the players and supporters alike, Bangor began the game in receipt of the kick off, attacking the car park end of the ground. The boys soon had their senses shaken, as they failed to gather the kick off, and presented Omagh a great attacking opportunity.

Thankfully a resolute Bangor defence held firm, and this allowed the young men to build a strong attacking platform. The first try of the day was scored by Bangor, after some positive strong running, great interplay between backs and forwards and sheer dogged determination.

Omagh presented a tough physical challenge from the outset, and the Bangor forwards thankfully stepped up to the challenge. At times, this was an extremely physical encounter for both teams, whether that be in defence or attack. There was no doubting the commitment from this young Bangor side.

However, it was disappointing to see that both sides were allowing indiscipline to creep into their play. With strong words from the referee and each teams respective coaches, Bangor got back on track.

In attack, Bangor really stepped up the pressure on Omagh, and this assertiveness paid off, allowing Bangor to obtain key positions and try scoring opportunities.

The most notable thing was the physical dominance of Bangor up front, and the strength of the Bangor backs when taking the ball into contact. Despite the heavy legs and soreness from the prior cup final, Bangor really applied themselves, and this effort paid off, allowing the boys to score six tries in total. Final score 34-5 to Bangor.

This was another great win for the boys, in a fantastic week for youth rugby in Bangor. The hard work the boys have put into training is really showing, and allowing them to produce these strong performances.

Bearing in mind the physical dominance of Bangor over Omagh, and strength in both attack and defence, there was one young man who gave everything on the pitch. He produced an absolutely outstanding performance. This week's deserved Man of The Match was James Hughes. Well Done.

Bangor seem to have also recruited another assistant, who showed great enthusiasm and pride in his duties. Thank you young Reece for assisting with kicking tee duties. We hope you’re available next week!

Bangor’s next match in the competition is a home semi-final versus Newry. This is next Saturday 13th April. All support for the young men will be greatly appreciated, to will them onto the final.

Training on Wednesday as usual at 7pm. In the meantime, everyone enjoy a few days rest, after a busy rugby packed week!
